"The Ultimate Board Game" – Illustrations & Art Direction
(Unpublished Prototype – A Chaotic, Cartoonish Tournament in a Box!)
Role: Lead Illustrator & Artwork Designer
Deliverables: Board Game Art, Character Design, Card Illustrations, Packaging
The Challenge
How do you visually capture the high-energy chaos of a competitive Ultimate (Frisbee) tournament—while making it accessible, hilarious, and immediately engaging for players? The game needed:
Clear team dynamics (2v2? 4v4? 8 players in a free-for-all?!).
Over-the-top sports humor (think diving catches, dramatic fouls, and absurd victory celebrations).
Instant readability (cards and tokens had to read at a glance across a table).
The Solution
Dynamic Character Designs: Created two distinct teams with exaggerated, cartoonish athletes (e.g., "The Huckin’ Hotdogs" vs. "The Disc-O Ninjas"), each with signature moves and silly personalities.
Action-Packed Scenes: Illustrated key game moments—like a Frisbee mid-explosion from a "power throw" or a player "accidentally" catching a rogue pizza instead of the disc.
Vibrant Sports Aesthetic: Used bold colors, comic-book-style speed lines, and mock "sports photography" angles to amp up the energy.
Functional Whimsy: Designed cards/tokens to be both strategic and funny (e.g., a "Distraction" card showing a player chased by bees).
Result: A prototype that made playtesters laugh out loud while still keeping the competition fierce.
